Comment: International Chamber of Commerce focuses on the “Integrity Advantage”

November 8, 2017

IBLF Global attended some anti-corruption events organised by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). It was good to see a major business organisation putting this issue at the front and centre of their agenda. In London, Laura Alonso, head of Argentina's Anti-Corruption agency outlined efforts in her country as Argentina takes up the presidency of the G20. In Brussels, at the Belgian Ministry of Economy, ICC organised a presentation of a new Anti-Corruption Self-Assessment tool for SMEs to be launched in February 2018. In The Hague, at the Peace Palace, ICC organised the final conference of their Week of Integrity. There were interesting new perspectives on "the Integrity Advantage". The idea of applying the Dutch "Polder Model" to changing corruption culture was of particular interest.

In our opinion, ICC is to be congratulated on taking this initiative. However, there remains more to be done, and we urge focus on the following areas of anti-corruption policy making: 1) integrating business ethics into company systems; 2) introducing basic compliance to SMEs in supply chains; 3) introducing best practices to companies in emerging and developing markets; 4) demonstrating where interventions really have had measurable impact.
